Introducing Flutterscopes!

A brand new self-initiated project / New Years resolution from the crew at Flutter. To help demystify the signs of the Zodiac for 2019 we enlisted twelve Jacky Winter artists to interpret each sign.

We’re working our motion magic to bring these illustrations to life over the next twelve months of 2019. Keep your mind’s eye peeled here, as well as over the Jacky Winter Instagram for your sign, as we’ll be releasing one of these clairvoyant clips every month to coincide with the arrival of each new star sign.

Aries

March 21—April 19

I once got an Aries to buy me a McMuffin by timing how long it took them to get to Maccas and back. And folks, therein lies the essence of all Aries people: competition. Being the first sign of the zodiac has given them a notorious hunger to be first at everything. Even things that don’t matter – like getting to Maccas and back in under 13 minutes. Losing life-long friends over a game of Uno may seem ridiculous to most of us, but who needs friends when you’ve got a cabinet full of first-place trophies and the comforting knowledge that you are, indeed, the best?

The upside to this ruthless addiction is that they’re the reigning kings and queens of ingenuity, setting trends wherever they go. You get a trend! And YOU get a trend! Aries are trailblazers. And whilst they often leave a literal trail of fiery blaze as they barrel through life, they’re also by far the most intrepid and spontaneous of the signs. An Aries is always exploring what’s new, actively making their lives what they want them to be, and their magnetic lust for action brings much-needed thrill for the rest of us. Being with an Aries is like drinking tequila. Sipped responsibly, they’ll give you the Dutch courage you need to ask out the bartender or buy a one-way flight to Cuba. But set it alight, and all that boisterous energy becomes volatile. Like a margarita turned molotov cocktail. It might destroy you, but you’ll have the time of your life in the process.

Where a Gemini’s party trick is talking without breathing and a Virgo’s is taking years to make a simple decision, Aries are really skilled at finding something to be offended by. Where most people could only dream of being so offended by something so minor, Aries excels. When provoked their rage is sharp and enormous, and you will absolutely know about it. Aries are extremely outspoken and their opinions will always be voiced, wanted or not. On the plus side, their short temper is short-lived and they’re quick to move on from their anger. “Bored easily” is an understatement, and they seek out new experiences as a way to run as far as possible from routine. Impatience is the root of their problems, but it’s also what makes them so ridiculously exciting and fun to be around. If you’re dating an Aries, take them white water rafting. Or maybe just light stuff on fire. Anything that will delay them from realising how dull you really are. But don’t think for a second that they need you with them on any of their adventures. Aries have less than zero patience, so if you can’t keep up they sure as hell won’t wait around for you.

They’re not all temper and arson though. When channeled correctly, they can use that powerful voice to fight for the little guy, lending their hefty resilience and bravery to those who truly need it. It’s then that we thank our lucky stars that we have our Aries friends. Just get out of their way and Aries will lead you to victory.

Pisces

Febuary 19—March 20

Hiba was my childhood cocker spaniel. Attentive and sweet, with tender eyes forever on the lookout for more ways to love you. She was always the first to know if you were getting sick or a storm was brewing, and she doubled as the perfect PMS heat pack. And sure, all dogs have some innate sensitivity to their owner’s feelings, but Shiba, darling Shiba, she understood a terrible day at work better than any Fido or Rex I’ve ever known. Why? Because she was born in early March. And that made her a Pisces.

And you know what else she did? She cried. And she cried, and she cried, and she cried. Left at home? Sobbing. Finished her food? Weeping. Saw a bird? Wailing. We should have called her Billie Holliday, because boy did she love to sing the blues. And here’s my point — those born under the Pisces banner have an otherworldly capacity for emotion. They feel everything — happy, sad, and in between — more intensely than any other sign on the zodiac. Empathy courses through their veins and allows them to pick up on subtle vibes that your average Taurus would surely miss. True story — I once watched a Pisces cry at the opening titles of Sesame Street. And whilst some might see this as weakness, the truth is they are just so attuned to the brave existential struggle it takes to be a big yellow bird in this world. Pisceans are dreamy and spiritual, connected to the universe in a way other signs aren’t. Where you might see a leaf and think “Cool. A leaf.”, your Pisces pal sees this leaf, envisions a forest, ponders it as a metaphor for community and isolation, and after several days of obsessive thought, becomes saddened by it.

More than anything our fish friends are true givers and they have a knack for making others feel comfortable. Every office, friendship group, or non-competitive after-work social sports team has someone who falls naturally into the ‘mum’ role. It’s here you’ll often find Pisceans, in the company of a variety of personalities, making sure the chilly Leo has a blankie and the hungry Aquarius has a snack. And they use these special Spidey senses for good, anticipating emotional distress in others and soothing it with their selfless compassion, generosity, and just a teeny dash of martyrdom. Their heightened consciousness also makes them particularly apt creatives, with the Pisces club home to many a gifted artist, musician, and poet. But all this sensitivity has a dark side. Pisceans absorb energy like a ShamWow and when not put to good use it can lead to inner turmoil of the greatest proportions. Like chimpanzees, Pisces love to nitpick — and swing through the jungle using their tails, but that’s another story. If a Pisces isn’t flat-out blaming themselves for something that went wrong, they’re probably worrying over how they didn’t do enough to help. But don’t worry — give them a few minutes and they’ll be back to laughing over some meme that may or may not also make them cry later.

Sadly, many Pisceans suffer from crushing shyness and modesty, not wanting to draw attention to themselves, and this is an absolute tragedy! For these thoughtful angels are just what we need in this modern climate of border walls, melting ice caps, and Honey Boo Boo. Sure these fishy folk may forever float in a pool of their own emotions, but hey, they are fish, and they sure can swim.

Aquarius

January 21—Febuary 20

As written in the great scripture (AKA the number one hit song by The 5th Dimension from the Hair The Musical soundtrack), this is the dawning of the age of Aquarius, and it’s time to let the sunshine in. What does this tell us? Perhaps the dark days are over and a new era of brightness is upon us. Or perhaps we’re all about to die in a fiery apocalypse. Truth is, no one knows. And that’s exactly how Aquarians want it. Aquarians are enigmas with a capital E. And a capital G — just to fuck with you.

Aquarians are just hard to ‘get’. It’s like that feeling when you try to reconcile Titanic Leo DiCaprio with Wolf of Wall Street Leo DiCaprio. Is any of it real? Why am I attracted to both of them? What makes Aquarians difficult, especially for those who write horoscopes, is that unlike Geminis (who ALL talk too much) or Virgos (textbook perfectionists), Aquarians and their freak flags come in a variety of shapes, sizes, scents, and flavours. And weird ones at that. That Cadbury Dairy Milk with CCs in it? Clearly the doing of an Aquarius.

Effortlessly charming and fabulous conversationalists, Aquarians are caterpillars with closets full of fake wings. They put on a great act as social butterflies, but harbour a deep-seated longing to crawl back into their cocoons, where they can think quietly, away from the emotional breakdowns of any nearby Pisceans. For all their friendly banter, Aquarians are fiercely independent and it can be hard to crack into their inner circle. Like a Libra telling you all the details of their dream last night, it takes time. But once an Aquarian finally opens up, you’re in for life.

For those astute enough to recognise their brilliance, Aquarians make marvellous leaders. In fact, our dear Aquarians are intellectuals, well known for their deep and forward thinking. So much so that they are often misunderstood by their peers, for their thoughts and ideas are too futuristic and progressive for us common peasants. It’s why we often mistake these rebellious visionaries for run-of-the-mill eccentrics. Don’t get me wrong, they certainly are eccentric, but they’re also great idealists with never-ending ideas on new and better ways to do things. We can thank Aquarius season for many a treasured genius. Charles Darwin — science genius. Ellen DeGeneres — comedy genius. Harry Styles — hot genius. See? It checks out. And unlike others (ahem, Leos and Ariens), Aquarians are not pushy. ‘Live and let live’ is the Aquarius motto. They relish in their own unconventional ways, and are accepting of the ways of others. Basically, they were woke before it was cool.

So what have we learnt today, kids? There’s no doubt that having an Aquarian in your life is a very good thing. But try as you might, there will always be something undeniably unkowable about them; like a mouthful of soup when you can’t quite tell what the special ingredient is. Is it cinnamon or LSD? Tasty, but unnerving.

Capricorn

December 22—January 20

Nicolas Cage is a Capricorn. Nicolas Cage has been in 96 movies. Nicolas Cage is an industrious, ambitious, self-confident man with big goals and the patience and endurance to make them happen. Nicolas Cage is also unequivocally, indisputably…well, a little off.

Stare long enough at a Capricorn and you may begin to wonder if beneath their laser focus and practical values there beats the heart of an Intel Core 9th Generation Processor™. As anyone who has had a romantic entanglement with one (or a ‘mutually beneficial exchange of amicable behaviours’ as a Capricorn might put it) can tell you, what Capricorns lack in emotional availability and spontaneity they more than make up for in their unshakeable determination and loyalty. You can count on a Capricorn. And you better believe they’ll be counting on you. Counting every minute you’ve kept them waiting in the car while you do some inexplicably Leo thing like change your outfit AGAIN. And of course, there was the Great Capricorn Discovery of 1642 — when a dedicated group of Capricorns figured out how to be both so distant and so clingy at the same time.

The truth is that beneath their shiny veneers, Capricorns share a well-kept secret. Sure they may seem normal, predictable even, but under their layers of rationality and consistency lies something so deep, so hidden, even Capricorns themselves aren’t aware. Ask a Leo why they did something unusual and they’ll tell you it was for the limelight. Ask a Sagittarius and they’ll say “because it was funny”. Ask a Capricorn the same thing and cop a stare so blank you’ll question if they actually heard you. And if you look back into their eyes hard enough, you’ll see the small flashing alert of “DOES NOT COMPUTE”. You can’t tell a Capricorn that they’ve done something that exceeds the limits of what is considered reasonable. Why? Because they are the all-knowing, all-seeing gatekeepers of what is reasonable.

Convincingly designed humanoid machine or not, Capricorns are enviably intuitive and give tremendous advice — usually accompanied by a meticulous set of actionable steps. These goats are extremely switched on and when the apocalypse hits, it’s a Capricorn you’ll want by your side. They’ll be the ones with fully stocked bunkers, tastefully decorated with Swedish minimalist furnishings.

Muhammad Ali. Kim Jong Un. Blue Ivy Carter. All independent, hard-working authority figures with standards so high LeBron James couldn’t jump them (yep, another Capricorn). These concentrated planners, with their heavy sense of responsibility and even heavier wallets (it’s a fact — Capricorns make it rain), cop flack for their conservativeness and attentiveness to rules, but the fact is that they simply know what they want and have the cojones to go and get it. It’s the way they were programmed.
